Carl Sagan on Time Travel

NOVA: Let’s start with the crux of the matter. What for you is time?

Sagan: Ever since St. Augustine, people have wrestled with this, and there are all sorts of things it isn’t. It isn’t a flow of something, because what does it flow past? We use time to measure flow. How could we use time to measure time? We are stuck in it, each of us time travels into the future, one year, every year. None of us to any significant precision does otherwise. If we could travel close to the speed of light, then we could travel further into the future in a given amount of time. It is one of those concepts that is profoundly resistant to a simple definition.

NOVA: Do you think that backwards time travel will ever be possible?

Sagan: Such questions are purely a matter of evidence, and if the evidence is inconsistent or insufficient, then we withhold judgment until there is better evidence. Right now we’re in one of those classic Details »

When we look into the past we see without a doubt but when we cut into the present and future will leak out. – Unknown

Fractal Zoom

Reality crushing fractal zoom…

The final magnification is e.214. Want some perspective? a magnification of e.12 would increase the size of a particle to the same as the earths orbit! e.21 would make a particle look the same size as the milky way and e.42 would be equal to the universe. This zoom smashes all of them all away. If you were “actually” traveling into the fractal your speed would be faster than the speed of light.

James Webb Space Telescope in NYC

Earlier this week I was wondering, “why are all the amazing astrological and deep space discoveries being ignored by the media?” I mean, in the last 12 months we discovered ice on Venus, Mars and the Moon. Why isn’t that ALL over the news? Anyways, I did some searching around I am now in love with astronomynow.com. The amount of mind blowing amazingness on there is numbing. I just finished reading about a star that we have been tracking, apparently a planet got to close to it, and it is in the process of eating it. The planets atmosphere got swollen and there is a ring of debris orbiting this monster sun. The planet is so close that it’s covering a whole orbit in 1.1 days. That’s INSANE… it take us a whole year. I also read about the Japanese program to build a robotic moon base, built by robots, for robots. WHY IS THIS NOT ALL OVER THE NEWS!?!?! That’s sooo much cooler and interesting than anything regarding Brittany Spear’s. But the highlight of my day of deep space exploration has been the discovery of the James Webb Space Telescope. If you have not already heard, NASA is retiring the Hubble space telescope. The image on the background of this site was taken by the Hubble, and it’s given us a ton of new understanding into the workings of our universe. The Hubble used to hang out around the moon and take pictures from there. The James Webb is going to orbit about a million miles from Earth. From that vantage point it will look deep into space and further back IN TIME to observe the universe when stars and galaxies were just beginning to form. It also will be instrumental in finding Earth-like planets around other stars and gain more information on dark matter, which comprises nearly 95% of all matter in the universe. HOLEY SHIT ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!?!?!?!?!??!

Anyways, if you want to see a life size model of this amazing device that’s going to advance our human understanding of the universe, the James Webb makes its next “World Tour” stop in New York City’s Battery Park, as part of the World Science Festival, June 1-6. I’ll be there.

Superfood: Chilli

Men’s Health: Learn the benefits of chilli – plus make a sexy salsa

Why you want it:

Next time you unwittingly crunch through a piece of chilli while eating a stir-fry, take those few moments as you wait for the impending inferno in the back of your throat to reach full force, to consider this. The heat you’re feeling is due to capsaicin, a compound that’s been found to fight prostate cancer cells, help prevent cardiovascular disease and assist with insulin control. Sure, it’s small comfort when your mouth is burning like a Brit at Bondi, but hey, if you can’t handle the heat, get out of the Thai/Mexican/Korean restaurant, you fool. Use chilli to spice up marinades, salsas, casseroles, dips, pasta sauces and salads.

Sexy Salsa

1 tbsp olive oil
1 brown onion, finely chopped
1 long red chilli, finely chopped
1 small green capsicum, finely diced
1 tbsp tomato paste

500g tomatoes, diced

Method
Heat oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Add onion and cook, stirring, for three to four minutes or until soft. Add chilli and capsicum. Cook for two minutes or until tender. Stir in tomato paste and tomatoes. Bring mixture to the boil. Reduce heat to medium-low. Simmer uncovered for 15 minutes. Remove from heat. Cool and serve with nachos, crackers or bread.

How can we lower the overall US demand for gas?

There has not been a new refinery built in the U.S. since 1976. The existing refineries have been upgraded over the last 30 years to support some higher production, but also to make the product safer and cleaner. This last week I was thinking, “How can we lower the overall US demand for gas?”. How much gas is used just trucking gas from the refinery to the pump? Could it all be pipelines instead? I don’t know… but I’m hoping we can find a way to get more economical with our fuel consumption.
