Transcendence

“that, which goes beyond” transcends any possible knowledge of a human being.

Metamotivation is a term coined by Abraham Maslow to describe the motivation of people who are self actualized and striving beyond the scope of their basic needs to reach their full potential and transcend. Maslow suggested that man is initially motivated by a series of basic needs. Once a person has successfully navigated the hierarchy of needs thus satisfying all their basic needs, Maslow proposed they then travel a path of transcendence to fulfill their inherent ultimate potential. To transcend you must first navigate the hierarchy of needs and master them.

Navigating the Hierarchy of Needs

The diagram above takes Maslow’s basic hierarchy of needs and flips each layer into two areas of work. The bright  colorful areas are the targets we need to hit to confirm mastery of each level. The dark, recessed sides indicate the work we have to do in order to climb up to the next layer. This is stuff that is classically labeled as immoral, and not spoken about. Focusing only on mastering the dark side will not archive much but it will make for a great rap song. To successfully navigate and transcend one needs to master the dark side but not be consumed, but continually level up. Life is like photography, You use the negatives to develop.

Basic Physical Needs

You’re on the internet reading this, so I’m not too worried about explaining how to get basic needs to you. You’ve got it covered. This level gets more relevant in the developing world and areas of extreme poverty. Many people who have transcended dedicate their lives to helping more people on this planet develop access to these basic physical needs. A great example of this transcendence in action is Architecture for Humanity. For people without shelter, water or food this level becomes incredibly critical. For most of us with internet access, spare change and electricity the big challenge is sexual mastery.

To get to the next level one must master sex in whatever way it is relevant. This could be simply embracing a sexual orientation that goes against your moral foundation, or working through insecurities and building sexual confidence. For some this is a intuitive ability but for most this is an area of life that requires much practice. Once sexual mastery is achieved one can focus on climbing up the next level.

Economic Success

Being successful and having money are two totally different things. Success comes at the pace one can accomplish the work required to display success. Money comes at a pace not always aligned with the pace of work completion.  In salaried work environments people work hard, build value and profits for the company yet receive a fixed salary and sometimes a bonus.

Environments that are more unstable, like consulting or entrepreneurial environments allow for more cash but less or no security. If one is able to provide financial security personally it’s possible to work in an unsecured environment. With consulting or any service position, people are limited by hours worked. This means money only comes on hours available. In an entrepreneurial position, value creation is exponential but so is the risk. This means you can spend a year of your life on building a company and get nothing out of it, or never have to work again if all goes well.

Whatever the case is, explore alternative ways of generating income to expand consciousness on what is possible. At the end of the day money is just made-up nonsense humans invented to control other humans. Play around with it and see which way of earning income meshes with your svabhava.

  • Creative – make something by hand and sell it
  • Care – babysit or take care of an old person
  • Freelance – do something that pays hourly for your skills
  • Retainer – get someone to pay you a fixed amount every month for your council
  • Salary – get a regular job just to see what it’s like
  • Venture – start a company and try and make a profit
